Published on January 6th, 2016, you cannot miss the book “Brain maker” at your bookstore.

The image on the cover shows a broccoli, strangely reminiscent of the shape of our brain but also the impact of food on it. This book written by an American neurobiologist named David Perlmutter invites us to nourish ourselves to protect our intestines and therefore our brain. Through a synthesis of the latest research, with the summary briefings illustrated with graphs and statistics, he explains the importance of the intestinal microbiota, its operation and its impact on our health.

Dr. Perlmutter points out factors which can damage microbiota causing inflammation and a hyperpermeability. Microbiota is unbalanced with loss of its diversity. This is due to industrial food too high in saturated fat and sugar, repeated antibiotic treatments, drug consumption over time, highly chlorinated water… It suggests that a number of metabolic diseases, mitochondrial, cardiovascular, respiratory, neuromuscular, neurodegenerative, autoimmune, (autism, anxiety, depression) and some cancers are associated with inflammatory dysfunction and therefore linked to the intestinal bacterial imbalance. Indeed, the intestinal microbiota constantly interacts with the brain via the vagus nerve making the communication between the brain and intestinal neurons.

Throughout this reading, you will discover that when intestinal imbalance is diagnosed, the neurologist offers reseeding with pre- and probiotics. He mentions reseeding by fecal transplantation, a developing solution.

He offers us at the end of his book many recipes to arm a healthy intestine.

This book is easy to access and very well explained. You will not have difficulty to dive into the discoverery of the unsuspected link between your gut and your brain…
