Who says diet, says most of the time « yo-yo effect »… We often end up recovering our lost pounds. So what exactly happens when you go on a diet ?

According to the French Agency for Food, (ANSES), 80 % of people on the diet regain their lost pounds, even more… This phenomenon of weight gain would probably be related to our intestines, and more particularly to the intestinal microbiota. Overweight, diet change, stress, or other factors cause changes in the intestinal microbiota, and may be responsible for weight gain following the diet.

To understand this yo-yo effect, the researchers tested mice subjected to different diets. They noticed that the intestinal microbiota of obese mice dieting showed differences compared to mice without a history of obesity. Indeed, despite weight loss, the microbiota of post-diet mice was similar to that of overweight mice. Post-diet weight gain would therefore be related to this « intestinal memory ».

Probiotics are known to improve the balance of the intestinal microbiota. Taking these good bacteria could therfore be a solution to limit the post-diet yo-yo effect.
