Studies show that red wine contains beneficial substances for body like resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant which can improves heart, muscle and bone functions. But did you know that red wine also contains probiotics ?

That is what González and his team showed. The results are really interesting especially in a context of increasing incidence of lactose intolerance in the world population.

According to the study, red wine contains 11 strains of probiotics, including Lactobacillus (usually found in yogurt), Pediococcus and Oenococcus strains (used in winemaking process).

The researchers conducted some tests on isolated bacteria in order to define if they were able to adhere to intestinal cells and were viable in gastric juice, bile and lyzozymes. It seems so !

In addition, the properties of lactic acid bacteria contained in wine appear similar than those of fermented dairy products.

Of course, dear wine lovers, do not empty the wine bottle at one gulp. Wine does not provide enough probiotics to have a real effect on health. Furthermore, as you already know, excessive consumption has harmful effects on the body. It would be consider as a new strategy to integrate probiotics in food supplements.
