Saint-Patrick’s day is coming soon : March 17, 2018. Many songs, dances and beers, what a nice program !  We know the harmful effects of alcohol. However, a specific beer has been developed: drinking beer could have beneficial health effects now.

Let’s drink to this good news ! Researchers at the National University of Singapore have developed a beer recipe in order to stimulate our immune system and gut well-being. What does it contain ? Probiotics of course. More specifically, Lactobacillus paracasei L26.

After nine months of work, Alcine Chan found out the right formula. She was inspired by food products such as yogurts and cheeses to create her own beer recipe. This work was a real challenge because the hops acids prevent the growth and survival of probiotics.

The traditional brewing and fermentation processes have been modified in order to obtain a sufficient number of probiotics.

This beer has an intense and bitter taste. Lactobacillus paracasei L26 produces lactic acid through the must sugars, giving a sour flavor to the beer.

After one month of preparation, the beer would contain 3,5% alcohol and 1 billion probiotics per 100 milliliters.

A beer good for our health ! Maybe soon in your supermarket thanks to the scientist who intends to industrialise it and market it !
