Also called gestational diabetes, 6% out of French pregnant women are concerned. It usually occurs between the second and the third trimester, but disappears in 90% of cases after the delivery.

Gestational diabetes is defined by an increased blood sugar. While insulin produced by the pancreas should help to control the level of glucose in blood, some pregnant women develop an insulin resistance due to a placenta hormone. Therefore, the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin to counteract this effect, leading to hyperglycemia and diabetes.

Although some symptoms exist, they are difficult to identify because considered as normal symptoms described by pregnant women (fatigue, increased thirst, increased volume and frequency of urine, headaches, increased weight).

Gestational diabetes causes many complications such as preeclampsia, premature delivery, macrosomia but also development of type 2 diabetes. To reduce its impact, a balanced diet is essential to decrease glucose levels in blood. New strategies combining a balanced diet and probiotics have proven their efficacy.

Indeed, studies showed that a daily probiotic consumption, since the second trimester until the delivery, acted on various components of this diabetes. it was shown that probiotics help to maintain insulin level and reduce:

  • risk of gestational diabetes ;

  • glycemia ;

  • risk of preeclampsia ;

  • weight gain.

Hence the interest of a supplementation in pregnant women !
